At the centre of the top three technological trends of the year – Metaverse, Web3 and AI – is blockchain technology.
Kick-starting the year 2023 is the world’s biggest tech event, the Consumer Electronics Show, which held their first in-person trade show since 2021 at the Las Vegas Convention Center last January 5-8. Around 100,000 participants attended to discover the emerging technologies showcased by more than 3,200 brands (with 323 Fortune Global 500 companies) on the theme this year: “Human Security for All”.
Giants in the tech industry such as Google, LG, Samsung, AMD, Sony, Microsoft, Intel, SK, and many other top brands were present. The most popular technologies on display were on the Metaverse and Web3 which were given their own newly-dedicated section at the Central Hall as well as AI which could be found in more products than ever before and had an astounding 579 exhibits devoted to it.
Metaverse technologies mostly revolved around entertainment and leisure activities but the event also saw a rising trend on enhancing productivity and the future of work. Brands involved in Web3 were also a part of the Metaverse conversation but additionally had its own agenda redefining the term as well as pushing the entertainment sector further with Mastercard promoting their Artist Accelerator program.
By far the most popular technology however was AI which had more than double the exhibitors of Metaverse, cryptocurrency, and blockchain combined. Majority of the products showcased revolved around digital health innovations such as digital wellness, women’s health tech, telemedicine, smart-home healthcare devices, sleep improvement devices, accessibility tech, and more. But besides personal impact, the technology is also well-suited to affect businesses with cost-cutting generative AI at the helm.
At the centre of all three technologies is blockchain. Blockchain is being used as a tool to propel the Metaverse forward, is being argued as an integral part of Web3 alongside cryptocurrency, and is being enabled in AI to provide decentralized learning among others. The Blockchain Association’s Executive Director also highlighted how blockchain will be important to technological trends for years to come.
Invited alongside Blockchain Association’s representative were more than 40 other speakers from brands such as Stellantis, BMW AG, John Deere, Netflix, NASDAQ, Amazon Studios, and Delta Air Lines. They delivered keynote sessions and panel discussions on the present as well as future of technology including robotics, cybersecurity, apps, and cloud which were also exhibited at the event.
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is hailed as the most influential tech event in the world since its inception 55 years ago. Owned and produced by North America’s largest technology trade association, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), it is an event that stands for innovators with the promise and power of technology at its core.
