Understanding the technology that mimics human creativity and intelligence.
What is Generative AI?
Generative AI or GenAI is a branch of artificial intelligence that can create new content, such as text, images, music, or code, based on some input or data. The generated content will reflect the traits of existing data but don’t simply duplicate them. GenAI is powered by foundation models, majority of which are large language models (LLMs) trained on natural language data.
Benefits & Applications
GenAI processes extensive data to generate insights and responses through diverse content. It is a versatile tool that has numerous applications in various domains with benefits ranging from faster product development to enhanced customer experience. For example, GenAI can be used to create music scores for movies, articles for journalists, adverts for marketing, or code for IT.
Traditional AI vs Generative AI
The key difference between traditional AI and GenAI is their approach. Traditional AI mainly analyzes data and makes predictions, which enables it to excel at pattern recognition. Whereas GenAI, which generates new data based on training examples, excels at pattern creation. Rather than being mutually exclusive however, the two can be combined to provide powerful solutions. For instance, GenAI can generate new content based on the analysis of traditional AI.
Customization
Similar to traditional AI, GenAI models must be customized to maximize efficiency and offer a competitive edge. Businesses can fine-tune their models by using their own corpus to train it according to their unique requirements. These models can then serve specific purposes, such as localizing content in multiple languages and powering customer service chatbots. If utilized properly, GenAI will become valued assistants that enhance and augment human capabilities.
Risks & Limitations
GenAI is designed to produce convincing outputs, which often leads to a false sense of security as its generated content can also be inaccurate or biased. This is due to the underlying biases that are present in the internet and society which is reflected in the data that the GenAI is trained on. It is therefore important for organizations to be realistic about GenAI’s limitations, consider the potential reputational and legal risks involved, and recognize the need for human validation.
