This page was created for all who do not know how to change or install the Logo SYS files (or otherwise known as the Start-up and Shutdown screens) on their computer. For the examples given here, I use my program of choice, called
Desktop Themes 1.89. The download link provided here is for the shareware version, however it works well for changing your themes and logo sys files. If you would like to create your own themes using this program, then the registration fee is well worth it.
Step One: File View Settings
First make sure that you will be able to see the logo files in your theme folders. To achieve this, you open a folder (here I used the "My Computer" folder to the left). Click on View and then all the way at the bottom on Folder Options. This will bring up the window to the right. Click on the View tab and look at the Advanced section in the middle of the window. Scroll down until you see where it says Hidden Files and make sure to place a dot next to Do not Show Hidden Files (the one in the middle of the three presented). Then hit the Apply button at the bottom of that window and then OK.
Step Two: Choose Logo Files
First make sure that you have a check mark in the box next to Backup old Start-up and Shutdown Screens. Now, if you would like to change your start-up and shutdown screens (Logo SYS files), then all you do is open the Desktop Themes program, choose the Screens tab and then click on the top most Browse button (if you have just installed a theme than it will open the window for the theme folder last used, if not choose any other folder conatining a theme).
Step Three: Installation
If there are 3 files included with the theme then they will be called logo.sys (this is the Start-up screen), logow.sys (this is the Wait screen) and logos.sys (this is the actual Shutdown screen). Click on the top most file called logo.sys and then click on Open
Step Four: Applying and/or Restoring
This will now show you the path to all three logo files in this window (no need to choose them seperately if all three were present). Now make sure that you have the check mark next to the Backup old Screens and then click on Install. A small screen will popup telling you that the screens have been installed successfully. In the event that you would like to change your screens, follow the steps from two through four, or simply click on the Restore button, which will restore the screens from before you installed the new ones.
